Stenhouse had taken over command of the Aurora on Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition between 1914 and 1916, and served with Shackleton in Murmansk with 'Special Services' in 1918. Between the wars he returned to the Antarctic with the Discovery Committee, and took charge of re-rigging Scott's old ship. He commanded her on her whaling and oceanographical research voyage from 1925-27 which the present photograph commemorates.
