GEORGE ANSON, LORD ANSON (1697-1762)
[ANONYMOUS]. A Voyage to the South Seas, and to many other parts of the world, performed from the month of September in the year 1740, to June 1744, by Commodore Anson, in his Majesty's Ship the Centurion, having under his command the Gloucester, Pearl, Severn, Wager, Trial, and two Store-Ships. By an Officer of the Squadron. London: R.Walker, 1744. 8° (175 x 105mm.). Engraved portrait frontispiece, 4 folding engraved plates. (Lacking final blank, final leaves G2 and G3 holed at lower margins, plates with small tears occasionally affecting the plate area.) Contemporary speckled calf (rebacked, old spine laid down, later morocco lettering-piece).

An 'unauthorized account of Anson's voyage.... the appendix relates to the history of voyages and explorations in the Pacific and the Far East, together with descriptions of some of the countries visited. There is a table for estimating the value of diamonds, and interesting plates, including a very strange one depicting seals and sea lions on Juan Fernández Island' (Hill). Hill p.311.
