Engraved folding map, 4 folding engraved plates by G.B.Sowerby junior, 1 folding hand-coloured lithographic geological cross-section, extra-illustrated at the back with an additional folding engraved plate of fossil shells. Original purple cloth, blocked in blind, spine with title and price in gilt (faded, spine torn with slight loss to head).

FIRST EDITION, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY to a 'geologist of considerable reputation' (DNB). 'The three parts of Darwin's geological results of the Beagle voyage were separately published over a period of five years, but they were intended, and described on the title pages, as parts of one work' (Freeman). The additional illustration in the present copy is bound at the end of the publishers' catalogue and includes a pencilled note to the effect that it is by G.B.Sowerby and is from Wood's 'Fossils of British Strata'. Freeman 273.
