The song Stoned was released on the b-side of the Rolling Stones' second single I Wanna Be Your Man, the first a-side written for them by The Beatles, which reached No.12 in the charts. According to Stephen Davis, Stoned was a tribute to Booker T. and the MGs hit Green Onions, Davis describes it as ...a blues hymn to marijuana, one of the earliest drug references in the new music (Decca printed "Stones"as the title on the early pressings). Since the whole band wrote it, they used "Nanker Phelge" for the publishing credit. According to Davis and Roy Carr, the pseudonym came about, some time in 1962, when the group shared a somewhat squalid flat in Edith Grove, Chelsea, with a friend with apparently dubious personal habits - Jimmy Phelge.
