A rare early publishing contract for the song Stoned, October 11th, 1963, the printed contract completed with carbon typescript details between Southern Music Publishing Company Ltd and Michael Jagger with Brian Jones, Charles Watts, William Perks, Keith Richards and Ian Stewart... giving their joint pseudonym - "Nanker Phelge", the composer section of the contract signed in blue ballpoint pen Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Ian Stewart, W.Perks [Bill Wyman], Ian Stewart and Charlie Watts, the foot of the document signed in blue ink Eric Easton, the contract additionally signed on behalf of the publisher -- 15½x8in. (39.4x20.3cm.)

The song Stoned was released on the b-side of the Rolling Stones' second single I Wanna Be Your Man, the first a-side written for them by The Beatles, which reached No.12 in the charts. According to Stephen Davis, Stoned was a tribute to Booker T. and the MGs hit Green Onions, Davis describes it as ...a blues hymn to marijuana, one of the earliest drug references in the new music (Decca printed "Stones"as the title on the early pressings). Since the whole band wrote it, they used "Nanker Phelge" for the publishing credit. According to Davis and Roy Carr, the pseudonym came about, some time in 1962, when the group shared a somewhat squalid flat in Edith Grove, Chelsea, with a friend with apparently dubious personal habits - Jimmy Phelge. Brian and Keith during this time worked on ...perfecting their most insolent face, the "nanker" which was achieved by simultaneously pulling down the skin under their eyes while pushing up the tip of their noses, in a ... cretinous mask of contempt. Nanker Phelge became the publishing credit for material to which the whole band contributed, royalties shared equally among them...
