Lot Essay

A number of stools similar to these in design are attributed to George Bullock and for which the design is thought to have been inspired by R.Brown, The Rudiments of Drawing Cabinet Furniture, c. 1819 and 1822. The design obviously continued to prove popular because a similar hall seat was still being included by Loudon in 1839, in his Encyclopaedia of cottage, farm and villa Architecture and Furniture, fig. 2079. Benches, fig. 1863.
