Lot Essay

Born of patrician parents in 3 B.C., Servius Sulpicius Galba held successive offices as governor of Aquitania, consul (A.D. 33), military commander in Upper Germany, and proconsul of Africa (A.D. 45). Although he fell out of political favour during Claudius' reign, he served briefly as Emperor from A.D. 68-69.
