Lot Essay

This rare Providence, Rhode Island table is strikingly similar to one that may be attributed to a craftsman named Allie Burton (see Monkhouse and Michie, American Furniture in Pendleton House (Providence, 1986), p.141-142). Another closely related example was sold in these rooms, 17 January 1992, lot 498. Half fan patera on the top leaf, the bell flower inlay on the square tapered legs, and the branches with floral and foliage motifs, sometimes set in vases in the front skirt are reoccurring characteristics seen in a small group of Federal card-tables from the Providence area. In this example, rather than being set into a vase, the vines are tied together with a bow.
