Lot Essay

Picasso was an extremely keen student of other painters' work, and he would often quote from or refer to them in his compositions. He also loved riddles. In this composition we see Picasso painting his version of Manet's masterpiece, with a figure very much like Manet in the centre of the canvas watching him do it.
