Lot Essay
Degas is just one of several artists Picasso refers to either directly or indirectly in his later prints. His presence here and in other Seires 156 images (see the following ten lots) is connected to Degas' superb monotypes of brothels printed in the 1870s and 1880s. It seems likely that Picasso is alluding to Degas' rumoured impotence (he was not known to have had any romantic attachments) by depicting him as an observer rather than a participant. However, Picasso may also be alluding to himself.
