The camel field scattered with small floral motifs together with diagonal ivory and sandy yellow panels containing arabesques around two large shaded blue and green serrated panels containing diagonal vine around brown and dusty pink cloudband medallions, a further pair of red and brown cloudband medallions above, two further part-medallions at the top, in an aubergine and brick-red reciprocal trefoil border between ivory rosette stripes, outer guard stripe changing to a polychrome dotted peacock-motif stripe at one end, scattered areas of wear and old repiling

Lot Essay

The design of the field of this unusual carpet shows a precursor of the classic "Chondzorek" octagonal medallion combined with other elements which appear in nineteenth century Caucasian carpets, particularly the diagonally set panels seen below the larger octagonal medallions. Other elements are more typical of Persian weaving, such as the tree forms below the lower "Chondzorek" medallions and the border design. As a combination it is a rare demonstration of a carpet from the formative period of classic nineteenth century Caucasian carpets. The long shaggy pile is woven on a very loosely packed white cotton structure with two weft passes between each row of knots.
