Lot Essay

The Mausoleum was built by Schinkel between 1810 and 1812 to commemorate Queen Louise, the much loved wife of Friedrich Wilhelm III. It was erected deep in the woods of Schloss Charlottenburg Park, and the original sandstone Doric façade was subsequently rebuilt on Peacock island (see lot 282) and replaced by a granite façade.
