One with puce interlaced Ls mark enclosing date letter V for 1774, painter's marks for Mutel and Pierre le Jeune, gilder's mark for Baudoin, incised fm; the second with blue interlaced Ls mark enclosing date letter X for 1776, painter's marks for Mutel and Méreaud, gilder's mark Baudoin, incised LF
Each painted with clusters of peaches and cherries and luxuriant bouquets of striped tulips, full-blown pink roses, convolvulus and other flowers and flower-sprays, beneath moulded double blue-line and gilt foliate dash borders and gilt line rims, the shell-scroll moulded handles also enrichedd in blue and gilt

Lot Essay

Mutuel is recorded at Vincennes and Sevres as a painter of birds, landscapes and edgings 1754-1759, 1765-1767 and 1771-1774. His mark changed in style over a period of time, from that of a very specific compass to a more stylized inverted V, this last found on pieces of 1771-1774 for which he was responsible for the edgings. Given that the present coolers each also bear the mark of a flower painter and a gilder, they serve as documentary evidence for the development of Mutuel's mark.

Jacques Pierre le jeune is recorded at Sèvres as a flower painter 1763-1800.

Charles-Louis Méreaud le jeune is recorded at Sèvres as a flower painter 1756-1780.

François Baudouin, père is recorded at Vincennes and Sèvres as a gilder 1750-1800.
