Lot Essay

The sitter was born in Haarlem and studied in Amsterdam. In 1827 he left for Paramaribo, Surinam, where he worked as a clergyman until 1834. He married three times, becoming a widower twice in Surinam. Diederich Janssen Eyken Sluyters was also a member of the 'Kolonialen Raad'. He later returned to the Netherlands, where he died in Amsterdam in 1841.

The present lot is recorded in the artist's notebook (see Ir J.G. Kram, Jan Adam Kruseman Jzn. en zijn catalogus van portretten, in: Jaarboek Amstelodamum, LII, 1960, p. 164, no. A.11).
