THE PROPERTY OF A LADY A collection of works by Hans Bartels (lots 169-181) Hans von Bartels was born in Hamburg, on 25 December 1856, son of Dr. von Bartels, a nobleman in the employ of the Russian government as a teacher. In his youth, he travelled frequently with his mother. During his travels he put his impressions to paper in a notebook, which he carried with him wherever he went. As a result of his penchant for drawing, he expressed the wish to become a painter at the age of 14. Bartels He was trained by the Hamburg marine painter Rudolf Hardorf (1816-1907) till the year 1876 and afterwards by Adolf Schweitzer (1847-1914) in Düsseldorf up until 1879. On his return to Hamburg from Düsseldorf, he skilled himself further under the teachings of Carl Oesterly (1839-1930). His insatiable appetite for travelling enabled the artist to produce a tremendous amount of sketches depicting various topics, such as the German coast, the Baltic, Italy and the Dutch coast. He later on used these motifs throughout his oeuvre. In the late 19th century he grew more attached to watercolour as a medium. He appreciated the speed of work for which it was ideal. From 1885 on the artist lived in Munich, where he was granted the position of Professor to the Academy in 1891. Bartels had discovered the daily fisherman's life in Katwijk as a subject in 1887 and would return there almost every year afterwards. By the end of the 19th century his work was characterised by his snapshot impressions of coastal scenes. Many artist of his day had gone before him or joined him in wanting to put the reality of fishermen's lives to paper or canvas. Artists like German Grobe and Charles Paul Gruppe had a comparable interest and as a group these visiting artist gave a good impression of daily life on the coast of Holland.
