FIRST EDITION, journal issue, of Bell's important refutation of the EPR Paradox (see lot 99). In May 1935, Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen advanced a startling assault on quantum mechanics known as the EPR Paradox. Based on the paradox, Einstein concluded that quantum mechanics could not be a complete theory of reality, consistent with the principles of causality and locality, but must therefore include additional hidden variables. Debates over this theory came to a halt in 1964 when Bell showed that no such variables can exist. Since the publication of Bell's paper, physicists have faced the irreconcilable nature of physics and intuition, and a rich philosophical literature had developed around the subject.
