FIRST EDITION, in book form, of three papers on the structure of matter, originally published in the journal Naturwissenschaften. These papers arose from Born's investigations of the chemical consequences of his and Landé's theory of ionic crystals: the first paper, "Das Atom," gives a general overview of current atomic theory and the remaining papers, "Vom mechanischen Aether zur elektrischen Materie" and "Die Brücke zwischen Chemie und Physik," deal with specific questions.
