MINKOWSKI, Hermann (1864-1909). Die Grundgleichungen für die elektromagnetischen Vorgänge in bewegten Körpern. Offprint from: Nachrichten der K. Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen. Mathematisch-physikalische Klasse. N.p., 1908.
8o. Original printed wrappers (short tear to tail of spine, tiny chip to back wrapper).
FIRST EDITION, SEPARATELY PAGINATED OFFPRINT ISSUE. Minkowski was the first to realize that the relativity principle as formulated by Lorentz and Einstein led to the abandonment of the concepts of space and time as separate entities, and to their replacement by a four-dimensional 'space-time continuum. He introduced the concept of time as a fourth variable in the above paper, delivered in 1907. "Only after Einstein adopted this approach was he able to complete his work on the general theory." (Twentieth Century Physics I, 252) Norman 1513. VERY RARE.
