FIRST EDITION of Pieter Zeeman's doctoral dissertation for the University of Leiden, delivered on 18 January 1893. Zeeman primarily studied with Kamerlingh Onnes and Lorentz, with whom he shared the Nobel prize just nine years later. This study of the Kerr effect was an important foundation for Zeeman's own work in magneto-optics and also won him a gold medal from the Netherlands Scientific Society.
