UNCORRECTED ADVANCED COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of Beckett's first novel, with pagination matching that of the first edition, but printed from a different setting and with significant textual differences. For example, the five lines beginning on page 105, "The freedom of indifference, the indifference of freedom... sunset landfall after many days" and on page 106, the six-line passage following "he bared his eyes to the moon..." are not present in the advanced copy. There are several changes in the conclusion of Murphy, including an added phrase to the final sentences: "The levers were the tired heart. All out" was changed to "The levers were the tired heart. She closed her eyes. All out."
The half-title bears a 21-line descriptive blurb, not present in the first edition: "Description.--A definition has been 'defined' as the 'enclosing of the wilderness of an idea within the wall of words.' To define some things is to kill them; no less this novel..." See Federman & Fletcher 25.
