8o. Original dark green cloth, gilt-lettered on spine; pictorial dust jacket (some very minor wear at edges, otherwise very fine). Provenance: F.J. Warner, Hollywood film producer (presentation inscription).
FIRST EDITION, second printing. PRESENTATION COPY, HUMOROUSLY INSCRIBED BY FITZGERALD TO JACK WARNER on the front free endpaper: "For F.J. Warner producer of this forgotten tragedy of the 'beautiful but dumb' from F. Scott Fitzgerald 1937." The pre-publication serialization of the complete text appeared in Metropolitan Magazine (September 1921-March 1922), and contained a two-paragraph conclusion Fitzgerald ultimately omitted when he revised it for book publication.
Despite his long residence in Hollywood, and close relation with numerous people in the film industry, Fitzgerald and Jack Warner never became close. This may have been due in part to the failure in 1922 of Warner's silent version of The Beautiful and Damned, the rights for which his studio purchased soon after publication for $2,250.
