FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY STEINBECK on the front free endpaper: "For Harold Strauss John Steinbeck." Strauss was head of the production department at Covici-Friede and later a literary reviewer for The New York Times. The book was issued simultaneously in pictorial wrappers.
