Lot Essay

Jean-François Leleu, maître in 1764.

This model of commode by Jean-François Leleu is typical of his work of around 1780. It is interesting to note the extensive use of poplar in the carcase construction which may indicate a date of manufacture during the Revolutionary or post-Revolutionary years. This commode is very close in design to three other examples by this ébéniste:
- Christie's Monaco, 17 June 2000, lot 255.
- Christie's Monaco, 1 July 1995, lot 155.
- Sotheby's Monaco, 18 June 1994, lot 150.

Known to have cost about 300 livres in the eighteenth century, the most recent example sold for 352,500 French francs ($49,280).
