These figures were produced by the Leeds Fire Clay Company Limited. The firm originated in 1889 from an amalgamation of five Yorkshire firms, the predominate one being Wilcox and Co., producers of "Burmantofts Faience" Art Pottery and Architectural Ceramics. It became the largest clay working company in the country. "Lefco Ware" was introduced for garden ornaments in 1912 and was a variation on their "Marmo Faience", used for architectural wares and facings. These two models are from a set of six, there being only three known examples of complete sets. One being a set in the Marquess of Bath's collection at Longleat House, one set having been sold at Christie's New York on the 9th December 1998, from the Justin Schiller collection, and the third set having been sold in these rooms in the English and Continental Furniture and Works of Art sale, 7th February 2001, lot 105.

The characters are modelled after the illustrations by Sir John Tenniel for Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
