Lot Essay

The design for these mirrors incorporating a festooned urn, husk-draped oval frame and elaborately scrolled base relates to the drawings executed by John Linnell in the 1770s (see H. Hayward, 'The Drawings of John Linnell', Furniture History, 1969, figs.90, 92 and 126). Similar designs were also produced by the firm of Gillow (such as one dated 1788). A pair of large scale mirrors of a similar design with outer mirrored borders was sold in these Rooms, 19 October 2000, lot 164. Another of closely related design but executed in carton pierre was sold in these Rooms, 16 April 1994, lot 154.
