Gouache heightened with gold on paper, a young prince seated on a throne with a dark-skinned dervish and an animal-headed god seated before him on a carpet, mounted on card with two line inscription in white nasta'liq, gold flecked margins

Lot Essay

This miniature is Shri Raga. The animal-headed musician is a kinnara, a class of mythical beings descended from Pulastya, son of Brahma. They are followers of Shiva. Kinnaras are often included in illustrations of this raga.
