Lot Essay

Along with Penn's "Girl in Bed," 1949, which remains in the collection, this print is one of the first two photographs purchased by Alexandra Marshall. Two themes running throughout the collection are "On Women's Lives" and "Rumpled Things" which appear as early as these first works collected.
