Lot Essay

Sie Kommen - They Are Coming - is part of Newton's Big
Nude
series. His inspiration for the work came from seeing full length, life size "Wanted" posters of the Baader-Meinhof Gang - left wing Germany terrorists active from 1968-1977 - in the offices of the Special Police Squad. The original working title for the series was The Terrorist; Newton changed it to Big Nudes.

While the photographs are each editioned 1/15 the artist confirms that they are unique photographs printed in Paris in 1981. No other prints were made of the contact sheet for Sie Kommen.
