Details
A tanzanite, diamond and navette diamond ring,
the cushion shape mixed-cut tanzanite weighing 21.14 carats in white raised four claw mount with navette-cut diamond twenty stone gallery and diamond three stone shoulders.
Tanzanite, a blue variety of Zoisite, was discovered by the sapphire prospector Manuel d'Souza to the south-west of Arusha, Tanzania, East Africa in 1967. Henry Platt of Tiffany & Co. named the new gem Tanzanite and Tiffany launched a marketing campaign in October 1968.
Normally mined as a brown to golden coloured crystal it was found that by heating and gradual cooling the colour could be permanently altered to a violet-blue which varies depending on the angle of viewing due to the stones natural strong pleochroism.
