FROM THE CELLARS OF CHATEAU GRAND-PUY-LACOSTE
Also owned and managed by the Borie Family it is marketed separately. Very much a family house, Xavier Borie, an old friend, his wife and children spend their weekends at the Chateau.
As readers of Decanter magazine are aware, Grand-Puy-Lacoste (not to be confused with it's neighbour, Grand-Puy-Ducasse) has always been a favorite of mine. It is unflamboyant, uncompromisingly good and benefits consistently from bottle ageing. MB
Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste--Vintage 1978
Pauillac, 5me cru classé. Château-bottled
What my mentor, the late Harry Waugh, described as 'the year of the miracle' because after an atrocious growing season the weather suddenly changed and from the beginning of September right through to harvest time there was uninterrupted sun and cloudless blue skies to ripen the almost abandonded grapes.
No recent note, but when last tasted fragrant, elegant, crisp, good texture. Fully mature now. MB
