Turriga--Vintage 1997
Sardinia. Argiolas
Turriga is a Cannonau-based blend, with with elements also of Carignano, Bovale Sardo and Malvasia Nera- no Cabernet or Merlot, I was assured by oenologist Mariano Murru. It is a single-vineyard wine from the Selegassub-zone, the altitude being around 230 metres above sea-level, the soil being of medium chalky composition with numerous stones for structure. The brain-child of consultant Giacomo Tachis, this wine, aged 15 months in new French barriques, dates back only to 1988, but has established itself as one of Sardinia's, nay one of Italy's greats. a breathtaking combination of concentrated fruit, fine, ripe tannins and subtle oak, Turriga is above all, at a surprisingly modest 12.5 an elegant wine, beautifully balanced. - Nicholas Belfrage, Brunello to Zibibbo
