]oratio McCulloch trained in the studio of the Glasgow landscape artist John Knox (1778-1845) and by the early 1830s was exhibiting his work with the Glasgow Dilettanti Society and the Royal Scottish Academy. On his election as full Academician of the Scottish Academy in 1838, McCulloch settled in Edinburgh and soon became a prominent figure in the capital's artistic life and a prolific contributor to the Academy's exhibitions. During his lifetime, McCulloch became the best-known and most successful landscape painter, admired chiefly for his large and highly finished loch and landscape views.
