Lot Essay

Waller Paton's obituary in the Art Journal (1895) noted that he '..chiefly delighted in painting sunset and twilight, with brilliant skies and purple hills, such as found great favour in the eyes of the public for many years.'

Christopher Wood states that Paton was the first Scottish painter to make a point of executing his picture from start to finish in the open air. He painted the environs of Perthshire and Aberdeenshire, but drew particular inspiration from the windswept scenery of Arran. The Isle of Arran is situated off the west coast of Scotland, between Ayr and Kintyre. This panoramic view shows the coastal path, lined with hay stooks on one side and rocks on the other.
