Lot Essay

In this, the last of Lautrec's major lithographs, the artist returns to the country subjects of his youth. Driving away from the observer in a smartly turned out trap are Misia Natanson and Charles Conder. Both were close friends of Lautrec. Misia provided him with a refuge at her country house before his final breakdown. The collie dog, a breed fashionable in Paris at the end of the century, belonged to a friend of Lautrec's who was also a supporter at this difficult time in his life.
