Lot Essay

The sitter married Maarten van der Koog in 1801. She was the daughter of Antoine Jean Rijgersbos and Antoinette Cornelie Rijgersbos, née van der Pauw.

Clasina van Stralen, née Rijgersbos (possibly the aunt of the sitter) was portrayed by Hodges in circa 1799/1800 (see A.C.A.W. Baron van der Feltz, Charles Howard Hodges, 1764-1837, 1982, p. 265, no. 497), a fact that makes the suggestion that the present lot was commissioned for the marriage of the sitter even more likely.
