Lot Essay

Like uncle, Nicolaes Jacobsz. van der Heck (for whom see lot 57), the artist is best known for his depictions of nostalgic antiquarian views of abbeys and castles; in the present lot he shows his quality as an painter of extensive landscapes. Another extensive landscape by Van der Heck, dated 1636, was formerly with the Newhouse Galleries, New York.
