After engravings by J. Houbraken after A. Schouman, the half lenght bust naturalistically modelled in relief, with long curly hair and wearing a lace collar and a buttoned coat, upon a fluted pedestal column with circular plinth enhanced in green and gilt

Lot Essay

Johan de Witt (1625-1672) was Raadspensionaris of the province of Holland and a very astute politician manoeuvring for the best interests of the Dutch Republic. He was murdered by the mob together with his brother Cornelis on instigation of stadholder Willem III.
