Lot Essay

Simon Troger was born in the town of Abfaltersbach in Austria, learning his trade in the first quater of the 18th century with numerous people, including Nikolaus Moll, in Innsbruck. After a short spell in Munich, he established a large workshop in nearby Haidhausen, executing commissions for patrons such as Maximilian III, Elector of Bavaria.
The present group is typical of Troger's work, which contrasts the dark colour of the walnut with the ivory, used here mainly for the flesh tones. Troger executes both secular subjects and religious ones as in the present case, which depicts the famous Old Testament tale of fratricide between Cain and Abel.
