A Small Suzuribako [Box for Writing Utensils]
Momoyama/Edo Period (Early 17th Century)
With overhanging lid, slightly bowed sides and rounded corners, the exterior of the lid decorated in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with gold foil, nashiji and shell with an autumn view of the Nonomiya Shrine: a courtier and attendant crossing a bridge toward the torii [shrine arch], a farmer leading a horse, a boatman and a waterwheel, the shrine set amongst maple, pine and bamboo, the interior of the lid decorated in similar techniques with a salt-burner's hut, pine trees, rakes, seashells and chidori [plovers] by the seashore, the interior of the box fitted with a brush tray to the right and an inkstone to the left, the inkstone with a gold-lacquered rim set within a raised gold-lacquer frame, the remainder of the board containing the inkstone with a design of chidori, the silver suiteki [water-dropper] in the form of a boat, the brushtray with a stylised paulownia design in gold hiramaki-e with inlay of shell, the rims lined in lead, slight old damage
