A Fine and impressive Lacquer Sageju [Portable Picnic Set]
Edo Period (Early 19th Century)
Comprising a carrying-frame with a hinged silver or shibuichi handle, the top and sides formed as parts of a pair of tsuzumi [hand-held drums beaten at both ends], one half holding a four-tiered box and lid, the other half holding a sake-bottle above a compartment containing a high-sided serving tray and seven serving dishes, both tray and dishes divided on one side into two lobes, the bottle in the form of a seated sanbaso New Year dancer, a jingle in his right hand forming the stopper, a suehiro fan in his left hand, the top of the frame finished in gold lacquer with details in black lacquer, imitating the stretched skins of the drums, the other principal surfaces covered in fine gold nashiji lacquer and decorated in gold, aokin, silver and coloured hiramaki-e with dancers' costumes, accessories and musical instruments, the seven serving dishes each with three books of No plays inscribed with their titles, the interiors of the tiered box finished in red lacquer, the sanbaso's fan and jingle in silver or shibuichi, his outer coat painted with green pigment, his costume decorated in gold hiramaki-e, his hat and mask lacquered black, the other less prominent surfaces finished in gold hirame on black lacquer, with fitted wood box
