The almost spherical body supported on three squat legs, painted in underglaze green, purple, yellow and white and modelled in low relief with lotus plants and leaves, the design continuing onto the flush lid with a spherical knop, signed under the lid with underglaze-blue characters Inoue Ryosai

Lot Essay

Born in 1827 in Seto, Inoue Ryosai moved to Edo (Tokyo) in 1866 and exhibited nationally and internationally from 1877 until 1903, winning many prizes. Two almost identically shaped vases by him are in the Khalili collection.1
