Super-chancery 2° (293 x 199mm). Collation: a-l8 (Gaza, grammar); a8 b10 (Gaza, on the Attic calendar); AA-LL8 MM4 (Apollonius, pseudo-Herodian). 198 leaves; quires b of the two Gaza works exchanged in binding, the misplacement noted by one of the Greek annotators. 31 lines. Type: 1:146Gk (text), incidental other types (title, preface, colophon). Woodcut headpieces and initials from two sets, strapwork and foliate (as in Grenville copy, IB. 24400). (Washed and pressed, a few marginal wormholes repaired in first and last leaves, small marginal section in quire a cut away and replaced, last leaf repaired at hinge.) 18th-century French cat's-paw calf, gilt spine with leather label, red edges. Provenance: annotations in at least 2 hands in Greek in the Gaza works (occasionally shaved) -- John Stanley Martin, Leeds, 1856 (title inscription).
EDITIO PRINCEPS of all texts and one of the earliest books printed by Aldus Manutius, printed in the year that the press was founded. Gaza was a professor of Greek at Ferrara before being summoned to Rome by Pope Nicholas V to translate Greek works into Latin. His grammar formed one of the cornerstones of the Aldine publication programme by providing a basis for knowledge of the Greek language. It is printed with Aldus's first type, used also to print his edition of the works of Aristotle.
