JOHANNES CHRYSOSTOMUS (345?-407, Saint). De reparatione lapsi. [Cologne: Ulrich Zel, 1467-69].

Chancery 4° (198 x 134mm). Collation: [1-410.6 510] (1/1-2 blank, 1/3r text, 5/9-10 blank). 41 (of 42, without final blank) leaves; first two blank leaves reversed in binding. 28 lines. Type: 1:96 (leaded to 106). 4-line initial opening text in interlocking red and blue with extensions in red and green, 2-line initials and capital strokes in red, contemporary foliation in red in headline. Modern mottled sheep, red edges. Provenance: Königstein, Church of St. Mary (contemporary inscription) -- Caspar Spengler (16th-century inscription) -- U.P. (modern bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. The state of the type shows that it was early in the introduction of the tailed h, which occurred between 1467-69. This once formed the first work in a 15th-century Sammelband, whose contents are written on the first blank leaf, together with the ownership inscription of St. Mary's of Königstein. Based on this manuscript contents leaf and the foliation, the editions which once accompanied it can be reconstructed. They were: Johannes Chrysostomus, Dialogi de dignitate sacerdotii (Zel, not after 1472, Goff J-282); Johannes Chrysostomus, Sermo super psalmum L: Misere mei Deus (Zel: about 1468, Goff J-298); Thomas Aquinas, De eucharista (Printer of Augustinus 'De fide', 8 April 1473, Goff T-291); Dialogus inter clericum et militem (Printer of Augustinus 'De fide', c. 1473, Goff D-147; or possibly one of the Gops or Götz reprints of 1475). HC 5051; BMC I, 182 (IA. 2749); VK 651; Goff J-294.
