Lot Essay

The model is the artist's first wife Ida, the daughter of the animal painter John Trivett Nettleship, who arrived at the Slade in 1892 and married John in January 1901. She and Dorelia had a ménage à trois with the artist, with both enjoying the privileges of the mistress.
