Lot Essay

Lowry spent many childhood holidays with his parents at Lytham, a resort on the Lancashire coast, and had happy memories of these days. He frequently returned to paint and draw beach scenes and seascapes. Lytham St Anne's and Rhyl had developed in the late nineteenth century specially to cater for industrial workers who could afford a temporary escape from their daily drudgery, the beaches therefore are populated with Lowry's regular cast of characters, transposed from the city streets to the seashore (see M. Howard, Lowry A Visionary Artist, Salford, 2000, p. 229).
