A fine and early Steiff 'cone-nosed' teddy bear
with rich golden mohair, black boot button eyes, pronounced muzzle, black stitched nose, mouth and five claws, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs, soft stuffing, hump and tiny blank button in ear --28in. (71cm.) high, circa 1905 (pads professionally restored, a few moth holes to pads, stitched repair to left ankle and some very minor thinning to plush)

This bear was lot 209 in Christie's first all teddy bear sale in December 1993.

Lot Essay

This bear represents the transition from the 'rod' bear until Richard Steiff's little gray bear prototype. The soft filling makes him very light for his size.
