Lot Essay

This panel is seen stylistically to relate to a small group of Medieval oak chests, an example of which was sold here at Christie's on 3rd November 1999, lot 807. A dendronchronology analysis determined a likely date of between 1435 to 1460 for the manufacture of that chest which included a scene carved with hounds and a deer in which the animals are moving in a spirited way from right to left through a stylised forested landscapes in similar manner to the present panel. It has been difficult to determine whether these chests and panels are English or Flemish in origin as examples are found in museums and churches both in England and Belgium.
