Lot Essay
The Arms on the pew are, unfortunately, not recorded at the College of Arms. They look very much like a Tudor grant, but it would appear that the family had died out before a Visitation was made in their county. The Visitations were instigated by Henry VIII as a means of taxing the Gentry and it was obligatory to have one's Arms recorded by the Heralds; the tax for having a Grant of Arms was not infact repealed until 1st January 1945. If the family had been in existence at the time of the Heralds' Visitations, their Arms would be on record at the College.
