Comprising: a tortoiseshell mounted horn example, a fluted cylindrical burr walnut example, and two papier mâché examples, one with mother-of-pearl and white metal inlay, the other with an inset white metal medallion with a portrait relief of John Wilkes, the largest -- 3¼in. (8.3cm.) wide; and a Victorian oak patch box, dated 1843 (5)

Lot Essay

In 1757 John Wilkes entered Parliament for Aylesbury, championing law reform, freedom of the press, religeous toleration, the electoral rights of the Commom Man and the breaking up of rotten boroughs.
His imprisoning in 1768, when Parliament deemed his election as the candidate for Middlesex as unlawful, bringing the cry 'Wilkes and Liberty' from the assembled mob of 15,000.
