Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724)
Neuer Atlas uber die Crantze Welt. Nuremberg: 1714. Hand-coloured engraved allegorical frontispiece, letterpress title printed in red and black, decorated with an engraved vignette map of the world on a north polar projection, 99 hand coloured engraved maps and plates (of 100, lacking map 37 hydrographia Germaniae, occasional light browning or spotting to a few margins). Contemporary German mottled calf, panelled in blind with central gilt arabesques.
A finely coloured example of the accomplished atlas production of Johann Homann in the early decades of the 18th century. The maps are well designed, engraved and coloured, and include the world, continents, and various astronomical plates. This 1714 issue of the Atlas Novus with 100 maps is one of the earlier productions of the Homann family, and is far superior to the atlases issued from 1730 onwards, when the plates began to wear and the commerical returns for the new partners cheapened the production of this classic German atlas.
