Lot Essay

A number of constructional and decorative features of these elegant chairs could suggest a Dutch rather than an English origin. Continental pegged construction, the leg profile and exposed stiles, suggest a non-English origin, however the exposed struts across the back and cross-struts supporting the rails are also an English feature.

A pair of side chairs, with a number of shared contructional and decorative charateristics with the present chairs, and thought to be possibly Dutch, was sold by the Monro family, in these Rooms, 9 March 2000, lot 20. A pair of walnut side chairs with related mythological needlework covers, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 14 November 1996, lot 121 (£32,200).
